Empowering Women Workers Through Childcare and Early Childhood Development
As part of PPLF's commitment to promoting worker well-being and family-friendly workplaces, the Safe Space for Women and Children (SSWC) at Maple Garment Factory has become an important support mechanism for women workers and their families.
Funded by PLAN International Myanmar and implemented by PPLF in partnership with Maple Garment Factory, the SSWC was established to provide a safe, nurturing, and child-friendly environment for the young children of factory workers. The initiative addresses one of the key challenges faced by working mothers—access to reliable childcare and early learning opportunities while they are at work.
Through the SSWC School, children receive care, protection, and age-appropriate learning experiences that support their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. The center creates a stimulating environment where children can learn through play, build confidence, and develop essential skills during their formative years. The benefits extend beyond the children. factory workers report greater peace of mind and reduced stress knowing their children are safe and well cared for during working hours. This support contributes to improved well-being, enhanced workplace satisfaction, and a more inclusive working environment.
The success of the SSWC demonstrates how workplace-based support services can positively impact workers, families, and businesses alike. By investing in early childhood development and family welfare, the initiative helps create stronger families and healthier communities while promoting decent work and gender-responsive workplace practices.
To capture the impact of this initiative, PPLF produced a short documentary featuring the voices and experiences of children, parents, caregivers and stakeholders.
The Safe Space for Women and Children at Maple Garment Factory stands as a practical example of how collaborative efforts can create meaningful change for working women and their children.
